I’m very excited to be one of six artists for the Chickwagon’s Sparkles & Spurs Champagne Brunch and Art Auction. Happening at the tail end of Stampede, July 18, the auction is one of the Chicks’ fundraising events. The event helps support the YWCA with live music, bubbly, silent and the live auction. The piece selected is “At the Trough”, a popular seller at the Stampede’s Western Art Showcase in previous years.

Field of peas (or dreams depending on the year)

I grew up on a farm in sunny southwest Saskatchewan. This trail is just behind the yard on the home quarter. In case you were wondering what a whole quarter section of field peas looked like mid season here you go. If you weren’t then just enjoy the tranquility of Saskatchewan’s big sky and watch for grasshoppers.

Raindrops on wheat. This was actually shot during filming of a TV commercial when I was working as an account manager (and capturing the behind the scenes shots). The wheat was sprayed with water to make it look like it had just rained.

My dad collects almost anything that is antique and western. These pocket watches I thought were interesting. The photo is retouched to make it look a little old itself.

You might not have known this but gambling has its own demon (instead of a saint I guess). This is Asmodeus. Well not an exact likeness since he wouldn’t pose but our best photo illustration of the concept. No wonder we avoid the casinos.

I had a boxer as a child. Wasn’t the smartest pup on the playground but oh what a face. Beautiful. Sorta. Just like this guy.

Mysteriously, an Avatar showed up at our studio. We shot quickly before he disappeared. Our first encounter with celebrity.

Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society

I have volunteered to take photos of some of the injured wildlife that has come through the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The dedicated staff and volunteers see hundreds of raptors, songbirds and mammals each year. This hawk was being examined in the clinic and was none too happy about it. Notice the talons.

This little guy was hungry but awful tiny. Many of the rescued animals this young need round the clock care. To help out the Society go to CWRS.

haunted house

This abandoned, old house still held a lot of character. From the wringer washer still standing in the window, to the peeling paint adding a wash of color inside, but it was the creaking doors and eerie shadows that really made you look twice. This house is in Southwest Saskatchewan and we took a number of pictures that day coming back later in the evening for some painted light pictures.

If thought the house had been abandoned for decades, the paint on the walls still gave a lot of color to the interior. See the whole series from the shoot in the Image Archive – Old House gallery.

Ravens

On a trip to Banff we came across a very bold raven who didn’t mind getting his photo taken. On a previous trip to an area near Cathedral Mountain we came across old mining relics including this old light fixture and the metal background. Combined together created a unique picture with the rust and lighting adding interesting effects.
